Last month, we asked for your comments on a possible change to the club’s constitution that would change the minimum age required to join the Omaha Sports Club from 21 years of age to 19, the age of majority as defined by the State of Nebraska, and we promised to publish your comments in the August Sportscaster. We received so many e-mails and comments on the web site that due to space constraints we are instead summarizing your comments and concerns.
Most comments in favor of lowering the age requirement fit into one of several categories. Members felt it would help increase our membership, give the club more chances to grow and prosper, and pass on our club’s great legacy to the next generation. Several members also felt this would allow better competition, and help to encourage development of younger athletes and provide a safe venue for younger members of our family to join us in OSC activities.
Comments opposed to lowering the age requirement also followed several categories. Most prevalent was concern about possible liability the club could face since many activities occur in establishments that provide alcohol or include other possible opportunities for liability. Several members indicated that they enjoy the adult atmosphere that exists in the club, and it was suggested that a better option would be to start a “junior” league that would be separate from the actual club, or to take more time to think through all the possible options and consequences.
Your board of directors would like to thank everyone who took the time to give us your valuable feedback. There will be a constitutional amendment proposal regarding changing the minimum age for membership to 19 available for your vote at the 2009 Annual Affair, which will be September 11 at the DC Centre, 11830 Stonegate Circle. Due to the importance of this proposal, we encourage all members to attend the Annual Affair to vote and make your voice heard.
