Golf News
25

This was a good year for golf. Summer holidays shortened our Monday and Friday leagues, our Tuesday league had yet another hole-in-one and annoying gnats plagued all leagues. They were killers! You were considered a savior if you carried a bottle of Absorbine Junior in your golf bag.

Many special thanks to: Diana Spencer, Jimmy Graves and Deb Emery (the league managers at our Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night leagues). Without their organization and weekly scorekeeping, those leagues wouldn't be available (unless one of you stepped up and took a turn).

Our league banquet was held at the Bel Air Banquet Hall on September 14. From what I'm told by those that were there, everyone enjoyed it. We even had enough money in our budget to gave away free drink tickets, but once again I didn’t take many pictures. Anyone feel like volunteering to be my designated camera person next year?

I mentioned a “hole-in-one” winner: Sue Moskovits scored an ace on the very first hole at LaVista Falls this year with brand new golf clubs (maybe that’s what I need). Congrats!

If you have any suggestions for next year, such as something you think would make our leagues more fun, I’m always open for suggestions.

The league winners are as listed below:

Sunset Valley League (Monday): 1st Place: Joyce Stoural, Larry Tjaden, Steve Wilhelm & Deb Bylund. 2nd Place: Steve Heinz, Mike Reece, Jim Sides & Jim Newell. 3rd Place: John Carlson, Bob Beck, Wendy Cramer & Kyle Wilhelm.
LaVista Falls League (Tuesday): 1st Place: Don Sullivan. 2nd Place: Pat Martinson. 3rd Place: Jean Sullivan. (Individual teams that play against the course).
Shoreline League (Wednesday): 1st Place: JoAnn Rowedder, Kevin Adams & El Siebert. 2nd Place: Steve Heinz, Fred Longberg & Kelley Rosburg. 3rd Place: Zach McIntyre, Scott Brown & Deaun Trayer.
Westwood Heights League (Thursday):1st Place: Marlys Oestreich, Diana Spencer & Linda Svatora.  2nd Place: Bernice Sladek, Jack Wright & Jane Pruch. 3rd Place: Deb Emery, Bobbie Greenspan & Dwight Peterson.
Elmwood League (Friday): 1st Place: Randy Smith, Michele Stultz, Pat Runge, Jill Rons, Sandy Murnan, Marlys Oestreich & Carol Johnson. 2nd Place: Gene Hug, Bob Miller, Kaiya Mears, Joe Ingram, Mary Murnan, Jean Mahoney & Barb Fulbright. 3rd Place: Brad Coe, Charles Boye, Rodger Bickerstaff, Robin Hawkins, Lois Dorn, Carol Bruner & Pat Martinson.

Special thanks (from me) to the many golfers that return each year. It’s great to see everyone, year after year, playing in the golf leagues. It makes it all the work worth while.  Many of the league golfers have been members for 10, 20 or 30 years.

And finally, our last golf event of 2011 (maybe) which we call “Sweater Day": This year we played at Indian Trails in Beemer. I swore several years ago, that I’d never return to Beemer, because of a problem I had with our scrambles getting canceled at the last minute. But earlier this summer I played with three friends at Indian Trails, I plead my case (complained) to the “new pro” and he convinced me things would be different if I tried once more. So I took a chance, made arrangements and gave it one more try. Indian Trails did a lot for us and made the visit a very good one and I think everyone was more than satisfied.

Thanks to the group of 63 golfers (not including me) that drove the 90 minutes to play. I know it was farther than our normal Sweater Day distance and I’m glad the weather golf gods cooperated.

Flag winners were unrecorded, but the flight winners were:

1st Flight:
1st Place: Larry Welch, Marian Wascher, Loren & Pat Galvin. (65)
2nd Place: Jeff Kurtz, Dave Frances, Deaun Trayer & Doug Kuhlers. (66)
3rd Place: Joyce Stoural, Tracy Shutt, Zach McIntyre & Randy Volquardsen. (67)

2nd Flight:
1st Place: Brad & Candi Coe and Ollie & Marian Pierce. (71)
2nd Place: Bob Miller, Bob Boicourt, Ed Lenz & Ron Policky. (72)
3rd Place: Joan Eckerson, Dave Griffith, Nancy Wordekemper & Dean Ross. (73)

3rd Flight:
1st Place: Mike Reece, Mary Wees, Ralph Fisher & Kelley Rosburg. (79)
2nd Place: Glen Schwanz, Dee Bigge, Larry Tjaden & Sue Spencer. (80)
3rd Place: Glen & Kaiya Mears, Barb Fulbright & Joe Ingram. (84)

We even gave cash to the team with the highest score. Two teams were tied but one team lost on a tie-breaker. They know who they were. One other thing to mention: The golf course failed to re-add the scorecards that were turned in. If you wrote 71 and your score was 74, they didn’t know. They did add the scorecards that weren’t totaled. Because someone complained later that their team should have won, I re-added, re-ranked and re-flighted our event (seems only fair). Sorry, we don’t have extra money for the real winners.

Thanks to all those that played in the golf scramble events this year; trying to please everyone is very difficult. I hope everyone had fun and returns next year. I will try to mix up our events and play new golf courses for 2012.

But just when you think golf season is over, could there be another scramble for 2011? So if the weather cooperates, I say why not play in November?  See details in the following article.
