Earlier this month, we played in our first annual Drumstick Classic. I loved it for several reasons: the 2-person format, Sunset Valley Country Club allowed us to bring in our own food, 26 people came out to play something different and even though it was borderline cold, no one complained and everyone wanted to play.
I listed this event as a “winner take all” and I almost followed through with it. But I decided awarding second place was a good thing, too. First place won $100 ($50 each) and second place won $40 ($20 each). We went a little over budget on the food, but there were “to-go-containers” for those that wanted leftovers to take home. Plus, I got a chance to give away some leftover league prizes, too.
Special thanks to Fred Longberg and Wendy Cramer (Sunset CC members) for getting us on the golf course and to Tracy Shutt for suggesting Sgt. Peffer’s as our caterer.
Flag prize winners were:
1. Closest 2nd shot: Sandy Martin
2. Longest Drive: Ollie Pierce & Tracy Shutt (into a stiff wind)
3. Closest 2nd shot: Steve Heinz
4. Closest Tee shot: Joyce Stoural
5. Longest Putt: Larry Tjaden
6. Closest 2nd shot: Lenny Wieck
7. Closest Tee shot: Bob Swatek
8. Longest Putt: Sue Spencer
9. Closest 3rd shot: Steve Heinz
The winners:
1st Place: Steve Heinz & Bob Beck (2-Monday night league golfers) - 41
2nd Place: Zach McIntyre & Joyce Stoural - 45
One person suggested a scramble in December (Ice Cream Classic) and another suggested a scramble in April. Both seem like good ideas, if you don’t mind playing in chillier conditions. Seems like a better idea to go somewhere warm in March for some pre-season play.
