Volleyball

OSC volleyball strives to create a fun atmosphere where one can make new friends, enjoy old friends and have a great time playing volleyball year round. We have six coed leagues of different skill levels (AA, A, BB, B, B1, B2), three women's leagues (A, BB, B), and two men's leagues (A & B).

Fall and Spring coed league teams & mens league teams are compiled via a draft, while the women's leagues are team signups. The Summer session is coed only and is also team signup. All levels of players are able to play.

End-of-Season Party. The end-of-season party will be March 31st at Johnny Sortino’s, 83rd and L Sts. The party will start at 8:30 p.m. Each team will be given a large single topping pizza.  Team prizes will be given to the top two teams in each league. Come see your friends from other leagues and meet some new friends.

Summer session team applications can be registered this night or you may also register your team on line by going to www.ihavegame.com Checks must be received before being placed in a league. We hope to again have four leagues if there is enough interest. Do not delay registering your team and remember that all of your players need to be Omaha Sports Club members. Please, only mail one check per team and we will not deposit the check until after the first week of play.

Mid-Season Party. Don’t miss the mid-season party, which is being hosted by the AA league, March 3rd at Muldoon’s, 120th and Center streets, in the Westwood Plaza. There will be drink specials and the kitchen will stay open late. Thanks AA for hosting this party.

Winter VB Party. Our winter VB party, which was hosted by our BB league, was well-attended and many enjoyed great food and cheap drinks. Thank you BB league for a great party.

Tryouts. After our last tryouts, many people questioned why they did not make a league or what can they do different to make a higher league. Here are a few things that the volleyball committee can suggest:

* Look at the roster. The names are listed in the order that they were drafted. This will give you a way to judge how close you were to moving up.

* Play more than one night a week of volleyball and work on those skills.

* Play in tournaments. You will get a lot of exposure to other players and be able to sharpen your skills.

* Practice, practice and practice.

During the recent OSC draft, we saw people trying out for levels that were above where they have played in the past and their skills looked worse against the upper level players. We advise players to only tryout out for one level above where they previously played. If player is a danger to others at that level, the volleyball committee will remove them from that group and ask them to tryout with another level.

Remember to check all the leagues that you are willing to play and show up early to tryouts. Do not assume that just because you previously played in a league that you will be picked. Guys, you need to try to hit any set that you receive. Do not stand there and look at the set if it is not exactly what you would have preferred: Play it like a set given to you during a game. Ladies, you are welcome to show your hitting skills but you are encouraged strongly to show off your setting skills. We hope that these suggestions help and please remember that we are members of the Omaha Sports Club. We strive to create a fun atmosphere where we can make new friends, enjoy old friends and have a great time playing volleyball year round.

Shoe Reminder. Because of the wet weather, we remind everyone to not wear your street shoes on the playing floor. Please use a separate pair of shoes for play. Please also pick up any trash lying around whether it is yours or not. Be considerate, pick it up and throw it in a trash can. Our gyms are very important to us and we need to keep those places happy. If we take care of them, they will continue to take care of us.
