2007-2008 Bowling Season Ends

Bowling League Gathering July 27th

by Pat Martinson

Although the final standings have been posted to the website since May, those of you who do not have email addresses or who have email addresses that need updating may not have had the pleasure of seeing the final standings, which are included at the end of this article.

First, I am sorry about the delay for the final meeting. I was out of town for several weekends in April and May, and with additional holidays, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, there simply were not enough weekends in the months.

I have reserved a meeting area for Sunday, July 27, 6:00 p.m. at Brewsky’s at 84th and Park Drive. We will be seated in the non-smoking area, and each individual, couple or party will be responsible for his, her or their own bill. Because the size of the party for which the reservations are being made is more than eight (8) individuals, Brewsky’s will add an 18% gratuity to each bill.

During the meeting, you can order from the menu. If you plan to do so, I will need to provide a head count to the managers at Brewsky’s beforehand to ensure that sufficient wait and cook staff will be available to optimize service. I need to give the head count to Brewsky’s by July 6, so please contact me with your RSVP before July 5. (Declinations are not required but would be useful to ensure I know you were contacted and chose not to attend). I know some of you are playing Darts, but hopefully you can arrange to meet up with your captain/team at Brewsky’s afterward.

You may either leave a message at my home (402-339-7496) or send me an email at p.martinson@cox.net. (Please do not add this email address to your distributions for jokes or other mailings, as I will not share your email address.) In addition, I have created a league distribution list and already will have sent an email regarding this event. I just want to make sure everyone is contacted, though.

As far as the 2008–2009 season, we have only one option for start/end dates. IF we bowl on the day after New Years (01/02/2009) —which appears to be necessary—but do NOT bowl on the night of the Annual Affair (09/12/2008), the day after Thanksgiving (11/28/2008), and the day after Christmas (12/26/2008), the league will start on September 5, 2008, and end on April 17, 2009. This allows for a bad weather day and avoids crashing into the start of the 2009 Golf Season.

Western Bowl raised the price of bowling, which with the cost of everything going up is not surprising, but my calculations indicate we would not need to increase the nightly cost of bowling, provided you are not relying on the prize funds to supplement your day jobs’ income. The potential prize fund for this past season was $2,948. If we do not increase the cost of bowling from the current $11.00, our prize fund next year would be $2,160 (a reduction of $788). This would reduce the “per win” rate to about 40 cents per win. This option is open for discussion during the July meeting, so those of you who received a 10-percent raise can make a motion to increase the nightly rate. At the meeting, we also can discuss any motions for revisions to the OSC Bowling League rules (for example, assigning the year-end meeting to someone other than the Secretary!). If any of you have particular items you would like to discuss during the meeting, email me early and I will add them to the agenda. Until then, enjoy the summer!!
